Another fantastic weekend for Scorpion Taekwondo saw another 8 players crowned British Champions for another year! We also won the 1st Place Team Trophy for the 3rd time in a row after winning 5 gold's on day 1 (Day 1 being for the elite player divisions). Scorpions also went on to win another 3 gold's on day 2, winning 2 more than last year and winning another Team Trophy for the kids & novice grades. By far a better weekend than last year!

Scorpion Elite Team for Day 1

What a brilliant Day – After his 6 matches at the Belgium Open Aaron Cook was back and competing for his club in the senior men’s -78kgs. Aaron won 3 matches on his way to Gold in devastating style winning all 3 matches by 7point gap! Aaron defeated Brandon Tosso and Delroy Hurst before beating Temidayo Jegede of Jaguar in the Final 9-2. Well Done Aaron!

Our next Gold medal came from Jessica Deakes in the Junior Female -46kgs. Jess who had moved up a weight class from last year defeated Lily Leotardi from Spitfire in the semi-final 8-1 and then beat Rachel Dougherty of Tkd Tigers by the same score 8-1 in the final. A truly outstanding day for Jess winning Gold after only winning Bronze last year, well done Jess!

Gold again for the 6th time for Stella Whitehead who competed in the senior female -67kgs. Stella defeated Stephanie Wright 7-0 before beating Farren Cummins from Manchester Aces in the semi-final by golden point after drawing 11-11 after 3 rounds. Stella then faced fellow Scorpion Jenna Evans in the final winning 6-3 to win Gold for the 6th time, well done Stella!

Jenna Evans who competed in two divisions, won Gold & Silver on day 1. Jenna who is 16 yrs won Gold in the junior female -63kgs winning both her matches by 7 point gap. Jenna faced Sarah Linnell-stocks of Spitfire Tkd in the semi-final a repeat of her semi final at Belgium where the match was decided by golden point, however today was different and Jenna defeated her opponent by 8-1 before winning her final against Chelsea Hellas of Pulse by 7-0. After winning her Gold in the Juniors Jenna then went onto compete at senior level where she won her semi-final against Amy Truesdale of Stoke UTA 8-1 and lost to fellow Scorpion Stella Whitehead 3-6. Gold & Silver for Jenna Well done!

Caroline Fisher was the last Gold of Day 1. Caroline winning the senior female -51kgs division. Unfortunately Caz was awardered the bye and had to wait to compete until the final where she would face Jessica O'Hanlon of OTC or Sarah Palmer of Kanghan. After a long wait Carolines match was finally on and worth its wait! Caroline defeated Jessica O'Hanlon of OTC 7-0! British Champion for the 8th time, well done Caz!

Other medals and performances on Day 1 were won by Daryl Stokes who fought in the senior men's -84kgs, Daz won his 1st match by K.O against Ewan Harrison of Caledonian Tkd before defeating Alexander Fedoseev of Pilsung 4-3 in the semi-final. Daryl then faced past Olympian and European medallist Craig Brown of Fusion Tkd in the final. In one of the most exciting matches of the day and one which could have gone either way, Daz lost 9-12 and won silver, well done Daz!

Another medal in senior male -84kgs came from Richard Fairhurst, Rich one of Scorpion Tkd club coaches also competed and not just to make up the numbers! Rich won his 1st match against Stephen O'Connor of Caledonian Tkd 3-2 he then faced Craig Brown in his semi-final and won Bronze, well done Rich!

Another silver was also won by Hannah Mayes in the female +68kgs, Hannah the least experienced of the Team and was unfortunate to face Stephanie Allen of Fusion in the final who won gold.

Bronzes on the day came from Alexander Myers who won his 1st match 2-1 against Shaun Sutherberry of Halton Tkd before losing his semi-final against John Steele of Ultimate Tkd 2-5.

Bethan Powell also won Bronze winning her 1st match in dramatic style defeating Shanice Harrison of Ultimate Tkd on golden point (twice) after a mix up with the first had to play the golden point round twice after drawing 9-9 after 3 rounds. Bethan then had to withdraw from her semi-final injured against Michelle Crocker the eventual winner of the division of Manchester Aces.

Luke Hudson won another Bronze in the men's heavy weight division, Luke is 17yrs old but senior by year of birth won his 1st matches 10-9 in dramatic style after losing most of the match connected with a turning kick to the head to win the match against Terence Cooper of RTA Tkd, unfortunately Luke was injured in his first match and could only manage half the match in the semi-final and lost to Elliott Coleman of Jaguar.

Steven Turner won another Bronze for the 2nd year running in the senior men's -58kgs, Steve defeated Tony O'Hara of Ultimate Tkd 6-4 before losing out in his semi-final against Tyrone Robinson of Puma 2-5.

Scott Atkinson competed in the senior men's -54kgs for the 1st time at the Nationals, still 17yrs old but senior by birth year Scott lost to the eventual winner from Fusion Joel Jackson in the semi-final.

Chris Powell also won Bronze after losing his semi-final on golden point, a match which never should have got to this stage, Chris was winning 3-2 with a few seconds to go only for his opponent to catch his hand which scored and took the match on the suddent death, unlucky Chris.

Other players who competed on Day 1, James Tully fought in the senior mens -67kgs winning his 1st match 7-6 and only losing his 2nd match on golden point, unlucky James. Another player in the senior mens -67kgs was Paul Glen Paul unfortuanley lost 1-2. After a long lay off Megan Hughes was back in action in her first match for around 3 years, Megan competed in the junior female -59kgs and would of won her 1st match only for a silly deduction that changed the match losing only 1-2. Scott Sutherill won his 1st match in the senior male -62kgs 5-2 but then lost his 2nd against Jordan Gayle of Manchesetr Aces by 7. Kieran Burke, Mike Distras & David Moore all lost close 1st round matches and there were defeats for Lauren Newton & Nathan Brown.

Sunday 3rd May (kids & novices)

Day 2 was another fantastic day. After not winning a team trophy for the last two years on day2, Scorpions picked up another trophy winning the 3rd placed Team for kids & kup grades on Day 2. Some outstanding performances saw Scorpions win another 3 gold's 4 silvers & 5 Bronzes.

The first Gold on Day 2 came from Emily Watson in the female -33kgs cadet division. Emily who won silver last year went one better winning Gold after defeating Lani Turner-Joseph of Ultimate Tkd in the semi-final 6-4. Emily then faced Cleoi Banez of BTS in the final and won Gold after beating her opponent 9-7, Gold for Emily Well Done!

Gold was also won by Adam Warner in the child male -30kgs. Adam won all his matches with ease winning 4 altogether 2 by 7-0 then winning his final 4-1. Adam defeated opponents from all over the country including Connor Hankin of Ultimate Tkd 7-0 and Aron Wolverson in the final of BTS 4-1. A TRUELY outstanding performance! Well done Adam, another medal winner in this division was Ben Carson who won Bronze winning 2 matches one by 11-4 only to narrowly miss out in his 3rd match and semi-final.

The 3rd Gold came from yellow belt Kai Law who won the child boys -20kgs (this division was open to all grades) Kai won his semi-final against Oliver Hammond of Ultimate Tkd 7-2 and then went on to win his final 8-2 against Coady Goodall of Halton Tkd, Gold for Kai well done!

Other medals on Day 2 came from Jake Rothwell in the child boys -38kgs division, Jake won his 1st match 5-2 before winning his semi-final 6-2, Jake won Silver after losing his final against Joe Gallagher of Gurumu. Another well deserved medal came from Amphon Bashford in the child boys -26kgs. Amphon won 3 matches winning his 1st match 7-0 and his 2nd match 5-0, he then won his semi-final against Lewis Nicholas of Lightning on golden point, Amphon won silver after losing out in the final against one of the best children on the day from Gurumu Viroshan Gnanapandithan. Mark Backhouse also won silver in the senior mens -78kgs novice division winning his semi-final against Ian Gaskell of Hama Tkd 5-0 before losing his final to Orlando Bryant of RTA Tkd. Arminder Purewal also won a Bronze medal in the same division. Another Silver was won by James Wood in the child boys -43kgs after his opponent failed to show in his semi-final James lost to Puma's Thomas Delaney 3-6. There were also Bronze medals for Andrew Regan in the Novice senior male heavy weight and also to Niomi Whitehead in the child girls Heavy weight.

Other players unfortunate not to medal were James Wraith, Callum Umpleby, Ryan Butt who won his 1st match, Daniel Carpanini who lost a very close 1st match 3-4, Simon Trussler who won his 1st match unfortunately lost his quarter final and Amy Blain.

Special mention to Paris Jeffery who at only 5yrs old competed in her first National event, unfortunately there were no other girls in Paris's weight class (-20kgs) and Paris had to move up to -23kgs and fight against much bigger girls. Paris was amazing and got many compliments from the judges! Well done Paris.

What a brilliant weekend 8 British Champions, two Team trophy's retaining the most important one for the elite player divisions for a 3rd year running and winning a Team trophy for the 1st time on day 2. No Overall Team this year losing out in 2nd place overall against a team who had more than 20 more players than us.

Coaches over the weekend were Peter Adamsons, Adele Deakes, Richard Fairhurst, Tony Morgan and Mark Eager and we'd like to say a big thanks to the backroom staff over the 2 days for a terrific job in the shape of Sue Bird, Steve Burke and John Birkinshaw.
