British National Championships 2010

The British National Championships were held on the 30th/31st January 2010 in Manchester at the regional Tennis Centre.

Scorpions had a healthy 30 players entered into the event although this was well down on last years numbers due to injuries and the children's International coming up a week later.

The Championships itself was the biggest it had been with over 400 players in attendence watched by the Sport Taekwondo UK National Coaches & Staff.

Day 1. (Advanced Juniors & Seniors)
Scorpions had only 11 entries on Saturday with most players on sunday in the novice or children's divisions. Some great performances saw Scorpions win 3 gold, 1 silver & 3 bronze on the 1st day with an unexpected Team placing to top off a brilliant start to the weekend.

Caroline Fisher was yet again in fantastic form winning her 9th British Title in the Senior Female -53kgs and being without doubt the best female player at the event. Caz won her 1st match of the day by K.O against Anna Gordan of Kings College before winning a comfortable semi-final 8-1 against Lottie Roberts of Wessex. Caroline then won GOLD after defeating Laura Sweeney of Caledonian 13-1 in her Final, an outstanding performance by Caz who will now be looking forward to competing at the forthcoming A-Class Internationals in March & April.

Another Female GOLD came from Stella Whitehead in the Senior Female -73kgs division, Stella still only 18yrs old won her 3rd senior title after winning her final against Jodie Simpson from Puma 13-0 with a stoppage. Stella will also now be looking forwards to the A-Class Internationals that are coming up.

The 3rd Gold of the day came from Hannah Mayes in the Junior Female Heavy weight division. Hannah defeated Tessa Hayhurst from Stoke UTA in the final 5-3 winning her 1st British Title with more hopefully to follow.

Other medals on day 1 came from Luke Hudson in the Senior Male -87kgs, Luke won SILVER after losing his final to former Scorpion Daryl Stokes now of OTC after he had to retire injured. BRONZE medals were also won by Scott Sutherill in the Senior Male -63kgs. Scott won his 1st match against Chris Cocker of Team Tkd 14-4 before winning his quarter final 5-2 against Roberto Belfiore from St Katherines Tkd this set up a Semi-Final against 2008 Olympian Michael Harvey of Manchester Aces. Scott fought brilliantly but unfortunatley missed out 10-6. Mark Backhouse was another BRONZE medal winner losing out to Elliott Coleman from Jaguar in his semi-final in the Senior mens +87kgs. Another BRONZE in the same division came from Daniel McGeoghan who after winning his quarter final lost his semi-final against British Team Member Mahama Cho from Voice Tkd and many people considered Cho's to be the best male performance at the event . The last BRONZE was won by Charlotte Thomas in the Senior Female -67kgs after she lost out to Kayleigh Wray of Ultimate.

Well Done to all our medallists on Day 1 including our other players who competed but unfortunatley this time didnt medal, Alex Myers, Mike Distras & Christopher Powell.

Day 2. (Childrens & Novices)

Day 2 saw another 8 medals won and 2 more British Champions. However the experience of the event was more important than medals to alot of the Novices and children who entered on the sunday. Having said that no-one disapointed and there was lots of fantastic performances to admire.

Daniel Levick won GOLD in the Junior Male -45kgs Novice division after winning his final against Halton Tkd 10-2 with a stoppage. Our other GOLD came from Charlotte Trussler who won Gold in the Junior Female -63kgs Novice division after winning her final against Ultimate Tkd. SILVER was won by Emily Watson in the Cadet Female -37kgs division. Emily won her semi-final against South Hams 7-4 before drawing 5-5 in her final against BTS player Cleo Banez lost out on golden point. Another SILVER was won by Jordan Hall in the Junior Male -55kgs Novice division after winning his semi-final against Gurumu lost his final to a senior from Ultimate after the divisions were merged, Silver for Jordan however he really should of won GOLD after beating the other junior in his category. Another SILVER was won by Kelly Linford in the Senior Female -67kgs Novice divisions, unfortunatley Kelly dislocated her Knee and was unable to finish her final match. The last SILVER was won by Gemma Pape in the Senior Female -53kgs Novice group, Gemma losing her final against Nottingham Tkd.

The two BRONZE medals were won by Adam Warner in the Cadet Male -33kgs, Adam moving up an age division from last year won another British medal after he won his 1st match by stoppage 12-2 against Ultimate he then won his quarter final again All Stars on golden point after the match was levell at 2-2. Adam then came close to the final but just missed out after losing his semi-final 4-3 against Jack Worthington of South Hams. The other BRONZE medal was won by Carl Jeffery in the Senior Mens -87kgs Novice

Other great Performances on the day from players who didnt medal were from Finley Summers, Tai-ll Tang, Luke Outrum, Jamie Kidd, Simon Trussler, Amphon Bashford, Callum Hunter, James Wood, Andrew Hodgson and Sam Gane.

A Fantastic Weekend, Well done to everyone who competed, coached or supported the Team.
