Chi Open 2011

Scorpion Taerkwondo took a small Team of 11 players to Spennymoor over the weekend to compete at the Chi Open and returned with an impressive 11 medals and another Team Trophy.

Daniel Brown was the first to compete in the peewee male -26kg division. Daniel competed in both novice & advanced divsions in his weight group and won 2 Golds winning all his matches by k.o or 2nd round stoppage. In The novice group Daniel won his 1st match by k.o after leading the match 17-0 against BTS, He then won his semi-final against Koryo again by k.o after leading by 10-0. He then won his final against chi after the match was stopped after round 2 with a 12 point gap 14-2. Daniel won the advanced group after winning the final again by K.O. against S.W.AT tkd.

Our 3rd Gold came from Scott Sutherill in the senior male -74kgs, Scott electing to fight in a higher weight division for more matches. Scott won his semi-final against All Stars by 12 point gap 19-6 and then won gold after winning his final against Central on golden point after drawing the match 9-9.

There was a 1st Junior Gold medal for Brandon Naylor in the junior male -45kgs division, Brandon fresh back from the Cadet European Championships found himself against one of his GB team mates facing Tryon Moores Duffield of NTC in the semi-final. The match went to golden point after they drew 13-13 and Brandon was victorious. Brandon then defeated Ben Morley of NTC in the final after another high scoring match winning 14-13 and claiming Gold.

Kieran Young was another player to try a higher weight division, Kieran winning the Junior male -55kgs group. Kieran won his semi-final against Central 28-16 before defeating the player from Kanghan in the final 15-13 and win Gold.

Kevin Lidgett won his weight division after winning gold in the senior male -87kgs, he defeated Han Tkd in the final 18-9.

Silver medals were won by James Wood in the cadet male -45kgs, james defeated Tkd Tigers by K.O. after the ref stopped the contest at 2-0. He then lost his final to NTC.

Hannah Mayes was back in action after a lay off with a broken hand. Hannah won silver in the +68kgs junior girls division with a semi-final victory over Chi Tkd the ref stopping the contest at 9-1 she then lost a very close final against a girl from Scotland 6-8.

Ben Tucker was another silver medallist losing out in his final against BTS 7-12.

Our final silver medal came from Niall Gibson in the senior male -58kgs group. Niall had a very close match drawing 13-13 against Tkd Tigers but unfortunatley lost on golden point.

Dominic Naylor won our only Bronze medal of the day in the Junior male -45kgs group losing his semi-final 9-11.

A Fantastic set of matches and results; well done to everyone who took part and a special mention to Ryan Holmes who again didnt have a novice to compete against and had to compete against advanced senior black belts.

Scorpion Taekwondo won 6 Gold, 4 Silver & 1 Bronze medals and the 3rd placed Team trophy.
